The University of New Mexico Lobo Soccer team continues to build on their recent success both on and off the field. After the historic 2013 season, the Lobos became one of three programs to reach the Sweet 16 in three consecutive year in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Lobos advanced to the 2013 College Cup reaching the Final Four for the second time in the past 8 years. The Lobos finished the year with a 14-6-2 record placing the team as the #3 ranked team in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer.com and the #4 ranked team according to CollegeSoccerNews.com. It was the program’s 12th NCAA Appearance in the past 13 season, the fifth time the Lobos have reached the “Sweet Sixteen” Round (2004, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2013). In 2005, the Lobos advanced to the National Championship game for the first time in the program’s history.
In January of 2015, we had 2 Lobo graduating seniors selected in the MLS Draft. Oniel Fisher was selected 40th overall by Seattle Sounders FC and James Rogers was selected 52nd overall by Sporting Kansas City. The Vancouver Whitecaps signed underclassmen Ben McKendry to his first professional contract after the draft. Finally, graduating seniors Nick Meile and Riley McGovern signed professional deals with USL-PRo clubs Seattle Sounders II and Real Monarchs repectively. In total, 19 Lobos have been drafted into the MLS over the past 10 years.
In addition to excelling on the field, the UNM Men’s Soccer Program continues to achieve excellence in the classroom. The Lobos earned a team GPA of 3.44 during the 2016 Fall semester, which was the highest the GPA for our Lobos in program history, continuing a recent trend. It has been nine semesters since the the overall team GPA was dropped below 3.2. The Lobos also received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 12th time in the last 13 years. In addition to team awards, Lobo Soccer players have won their share of individual academic honors; the program has had a player named as an NSCAA Academic All-American on 17 occasions.
