The University of New Mexico Lobo Soccer team continues to build on their recent success both on and off the field. In a historic 2013 season, the Lobos became one of three programs to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Lobos advanced to the 2013 College Cup reaching the Final Four for the second time in the past 8 years. The Lobos finished the year with a 14-6-2 record placing the team as the #3 ranked team in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer.com and the #4 ranked team according to CollegeSoccerNews.com. It was the program’s 12th NCAA Appearance in the past 13 season, the fifth time the Lobos have reached the “Sweet Sixteen” Round (2004, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2013). In 2005 the Lobos advanced to the National Championship game for the first time in the program’s history.
In January of 2014, all 4 Lobo graduating seniors were selected in the MLS Super Draft. Two-time All-American Kyle Venter was selected by the LA Galaxy with the 24th overall pick. The Vancouver Whitecaps selected both Michael Kafari and Michael Calderon, while goalkeeper Michal Lisch was selected by the Houston Dynamo. The Lobos were one of four college soccer programs to have four players selected in the 2014 MLS Super Draft.
In addition to excelling on the field, the UNM Men’s Soccer Program continues to achieve excellence in the classroom. The team earned a team GPA of 3.43 this past Fall semester tying the record for the highest team GPA in the program’s history. The Lobos also received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 3rd consecutive year.
